Say Something

Our Goal

Whether it’s someone you know or a passer by, we want people to be reminded they are someone worthwhile. A simple compliment or acknowledgment can make all the difference to someone’s day. You never know what someone is going through.

In Honor of Ted

At Ted’s funeral, many people said kind things about him that he didn’t have a chance to hear when he was with us. They stated how they had enjoyed his company and some wished they had kept in contact or made an effort to reconnect. Later, the vet receptionists shared with us how he’d make them laugh whenever they’d see him. We hope the Say Something Project inspires you to speak up and let others know that you are glad they are alive. A simple word of appreciation could be the spark that brightens someone’s day and enriches their life immeasurably. You never know how much it could impact a person’s happiness.

Research indicates that most people don’t realize how much a small act of kindness can do for the receiver. A recent study by Kumar and Epley indicates that this underestimation may cause people to miss opportunities to bring happiness to others.

Our goal is different from Random Acts of Kindness, where one does something nice for someone they don’t know, like visiting a nursing home and bringing cookies or handing out flowers on a street corner. We are talking about showing a friend or relative or coworker that we consider them valuable. We may think “I really like that person”, but they don’t know that unless we tell them “I enjoy it when you tell a joke during a meeting” or “we haven’t hung out in a while, how about playing tennis Saturday?”.
